Briefings on Climate

First IEEP/GLOBE EU Lunch Event for MEPs

29 September - Supporting Parliamentarians - Delivering a Unified and Responsible EU Position for Copenhagen

On the 29 September IEEP and GLOBE EU held the first of our lunchtime working sessions on the future of climate action. This session focused on 'How can MEP's help deliver a unified and responsible EU position for COP15 of the UNFCCC in Copenhagen?' Chaired by Sirpa Pietikäinen (MEP and President of GLOBE EU) the session commenced with short presentations from Oxfam International's Elise Ford and Jacqueline McGlade, Director of the European Environment Agency. The floor was then opened for discussions with the MEPs present moderated by David Baldock, Director of IEEP. The discussion session included four formal interventions from MEPs: Satu Hassi (Green); Fiona Hall (ALDE), Theodoros Skylakakis (EPP); and Dan Jorgensen (S&D).

While this was an informal meeting, conclusions could be drawn on three topics: key elements of a future international deal; Copenhagen's place in the broader sphere of climate action i.e. there are other priorities on the climate agenda that should be taken forward simultaneous to the international debate; and what can MEPs do now and at the negotiations to help promote an ambitious deal.
