Briefings on Climate

Training for MEP Assistants on Climate Change and Related Issues

From the 30 October IEEP/GLOBE EU will be offering a training programme for MEP Assistants on climate change and related issues such as: use of biomass for energy, emissions trading, efficiency and product policy, the nature of international negotiations, land use change, biodiversity and ecosystem services, the future of EU funding and subsidy reform.

MEP assistants are vital to the effective functioning of the European Parliament, but they are rarely offered training aimed directly at their needs. IEEP's training programme will, therefore, explain in a balanced, non-partisan way: existing legislative requirements, the underlying science, policy processes and needs that are driving the EU agenda.

The training will be delivered by both renowned IEEP researchers and external experts. Speakers invited include: Caroline Jackson, former MEP and ENVI chair; Jorgen Henningsen, former Director of DG ENV and expert adviser to DG TREN; Sebastian Oberthur, Director at the Institute of European Studies and adviser to the German Federal Government on climate; and representatives from the EEA, the GLOBE EU secretariat and ENVI committee secretariat.

These sessions will build on IEEP's briefing pack on climate change and also the 'Welcome Pack' supplied by the Parliamentary Secretariat to the ENVI committee at the start of the Parliamentary term - for which IEEP were the lead authors.

The training programme for assistants will take place every Friday lunchtime (12:30 - 2:30) between 30 October and 4 December in the European Parliament.

IEEP is an educational charity, therefore, assistants attending the sessions will be able to cite this as a formal training programme on their CVs.
