Analysis of an Amendment to Article 14 in the Council Common Position for adopting a Directive on Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators and Repealing 91/157/EEC.

This briefing provided additional information to the European Parliament Environment Committee to assist it with the decision as to whether a proposed ban on portable batteries with a lead content over 40 parts per million should be supported. It outlined the state of the market and the types of battery and application that would be affected by the proposed ban, the availability of substitutes, and whether there were grounds for exemptions if a ban were introduced. The briefing is one in a series of eight briefings produced for the European Parliament under a Framework contract led by IEEP.
