What is the justification for spending a substantial sum on supporting agriculture in Europe?

What is the justification for spending a substantial sum on supporting agriculture in Europe? Is the principle public money for public goods? If so, what are the public goods, how are they linked to agriculture and what policies can be used to provide them? These are some of the questions arising in the current debate on the future of the CAP.

Some of the answers are tackled in a new brochure published by the European Network for Rural Development reflecting the work of an expert group building very extensively on the Institute’s research and writing in this area
