Benefits of marine protected areas in the context of EU’s Natura 2000 network

A scoping study by IEEP, funded by DG Environment of the European Commission, offers a overview of the published estimates of the ecosystem services provided by European MPAs, both in physical and monetary terms. The report shows how local communities and visitors to marine sites already benefit from protected areas. It also highlights that there still is need for better local data on the types and magnitude of these different benefits.

The report also proposes a step-wise methodology to assess the overall benefits provided by the EU’s marine Natura 2000 network. This methodology builds on the understanding of benefits at the level of individual sites and using that information to further explore possibilities for scaling up.

The report can be found on the dedicated DG Environment webpage.
